SPECT of cerebral perfusion

Service description

It is a test indicated to evaluate the perfusion (blood flow) of the different areas of the brain.

It is very useful for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, as well as other senile dementias and local cerebral flow disorders. The test should be indicated by the corresponding specialists.

Preparation for the study

In order to reduce the activity in the choroid and thyroid plexus, a capsule will be taken prior to the test, which will be given to you in Nuclear Medicine.

On the day of the test you will be able to have a light breakfast together with your usual medication. You will not be able to drink coffee, tea, chocolate or fizzy drinks.

It is important that you are as calm as possible since it is a very sensitive test that is influenced by the smallest incidence.

Preparation for the test

  • It is performed in Nuclear Medicine.

  • First, the tracer will be administered intravenously.

  • In order for the tracer to fix correctly in the brain structures, it will be necessary to wait a certain amount of time. The authorized personnel will indicate your time.

  • You will then be taken to the Gammacamera where the SPECT technique will provide the necessary information for the specialist to issue the corresponding report. The approximate duration is 20 minutes.
