Pneumology
Service description
What is pneumology?
Pulmonology is the medical specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the respiratory system. This discipline is fundamental in addressing various respiratory pathologies, including those that are common and preventable, such as respiratory infections (upper respiratory tract infections, tracheobronchitis and pneumonia).
He also treats conditions with systemic involvement, such as pulmonary interstitial diseases, pulmonary vascular diseases and extrapulmonary pathologies affecting the pleura and mediastinum.
During the consultation, the pulmonologist may perform a series of complementary tests, such as spirometry, chest X-ray and tomography, cardiorespiratory sleep study and oximetry, to comprehensively assess the patient's respiratory health.
Main respiratory diseases
Smoking: Main cause of many respiratory diseases.
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease): Progressive condition that limits airflow.
Emphysema: Damage to the alveoli that prevents proper breathing.
Chronic Bronchitis: Persistent inflammation of the airways.
Sleep Apnea: Sleep disorder that causes pauses in breathing.
Respiratory Failure: Inability of the lungs to adequately oxygenate the blood.
Asthma: A chronic disease that causes inflammation and constriction of the airways.
Pneumology tests at Affidea
At Affidea, we perform a variety of tests to evaluate respiratory function and diagnose lung disease:
Pulmonary Diffusion for CO: Evaluates the ability of the lungs to transfer gases, using a mixture with a low concentration of carbon monoxide.
Spirometry: Non-invasive method that measures respiratory volumes and flows, providing information on lung function.
Cardio-Respiratory Sleep Study: Test that evaluates snoring and apnea episodes during sleep, as well as excessive daytime sleepiness and nighttime awakenings.
Oximetry: A noninvasive test that measures blood oxygen saturation using a light sensor placed on the finger.
Total Body Plethysmography/Ventilatory Mechanics: Diagnostic technique that complements spirometry, providing detailed information on respiratory mechanics.
6-Minute Walk Test (PM6M): Evaluates exercise tolerance in patients with respiratory diseases.
Exercise Induced Breathing Test: Designed to detect exercise-induced transient bronchospasm, common in asthmatic patients.
Prick Test: Method used to identify allergens to which the patient is sensitive, aiding in the diagnosis of allergic diseases.
Pulmonology is essential for the management and treatment of respiratory conditions, and at Affidea we are committed to providing accurate diagnosis and effective treatment to improve the respiratory health of our patients.
