It is an X-ray study of the large intestine whose purpose is to assess the shape and function of the colon. The test consists of introducing barium contrast, sometimes barium and air, through the rectum and obtaining x-rays that the radiologist will evaluate in order to issue his report.

The physician may request this test for different reasons; the most frequent are the existence of: chronic diarrhea, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, unjustified weight loss, change in bowel habit.

Colon imaging is used to diagnose diseases such as: ulcers, benign tumors, cancer, inflammatory diseases and other types of diseases that can affect the colon.
