What is a mammogram?

Digital mammography uses X-rays to obtain detailed images of the breast. Mammography is the most widely used test for breast cancer prophylaxis and diagnosis.

In most countries, mammography is one of the tests performed as part of national breast cancer prevention programs. Mammography is recommended for women from the age of 35 when they have a family history of breast cancer or from the age of 40 when there is no family history of the disease.

Types of mammography

Bilateral mammography

As a general rule, a bilateral mammogram is performed, in which two views of each breast are taken. It may happen that only one breast is examined - unilateral mammography - in the case of mastectomized persons, for example, or when a complementary view is required.

Digital mammography

Digital mammography involves rapid computer processing of the images obtained, allowing the physician to better work with and analyze these images, which are then stored and provided in digital format.

Mammography with tomosynthesis technology

Mammography with tomosynthesis technology is a recent innovation that makes it possible to capture several different planes of the same breast, which, once grouped and processed, generate a 3D image. The high degree of analysis obtained by reducing the sum effect of the different structures allows a more complete reading with a radiation level little different from that of a normal mammogram.

It is very important when evaluating dense breasts, small lesions and distortions.

What is mammography used for?

Mammography provides a global image of the breast, which allows the identification and distinction of different breast pathologies, including benign and malignant tumors. This test is used for breast cancer screening, together with breast ultrasound.

When should I have a mammogram?

This test is used for breast cancer screening. Screening involves using diagnostic tests to detect disease in asymptomatic individuals. The age at which you should begin screening depends on your clinical risk.

In general, all women over the age of 30 should ask their physician to assess their risk factor to define the frequency and type of tests to be performed to ensure a possible early diagnosis.

Is there a difference between mammography and breast ultrasound?

Unlike mammography, breast ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation, but ultrasound. That is why it is recommended to study the breasts of young women, pregnant women and for follow-up examinations.

Does mammography require any preparation?

Mammography does not require any preparation. You may be asked to remove some clothing and put on disposable clothing that is compatible with the exam. You may also be asked to remove any accessories, such as earrings, rings, necklaces, or bracelets, that may interfere with the imaging.

How long does a mammogram take?

The mammogram only takes a few seconds, but the entire procedure, including preparation, may take about 10 minutes.
