DaTSCAN
Service description
DaTSCAN is a test indicated to detect the loss of dopaminergic nerve endings in the striatum of the brain.
It is useful in differentiating Essential Tremor from Parkinson's Disease and other diseases of the Central Nervous System. It can also help to differentiate Alzheimer's disease from dementia with Levi's bodies. The test should be indicated by the appropriate specialists.
PREPARATION FOR THE STUDY:
In order to avoid unnecessary thyroid radiation, prior to the test the thyroid will be blocked with the administration of a capsule that you will take two hours before the test and that you will previously pick up at Nuclear Medicine. You will be given a second capsule to take the next day. The day of the test you will be able to have a light breakfast together with your usual medication. You will not be allowed to drink coffee, tea, chocolate or soft drinks.
PREPARATION FOR THE TEST
It is performed in Nuclear Medicine
First of all, the tracer will be administered intravenously, which will be done slowly to avoid discomfort.
It will be necessary to wait between 3 and 6 hours for the tracer to fix correctly in the brain structures to be studied. The authorized personnel will indicate your time.
Then you will go to the Gammacamera where the SPECT technique will obtain the necessary information for the specialist to issue the corresponding report. The approximate duration is 15 minutes.
THE DYNAMICS COULD BE AS FOLLOWS:
7.30 a.m.: Capsule intake.
9.30 a.m.: Appointment to administer the marker.
13 hours: Performance of the SPECT scan.
7.30 a.m. the next day: Second capsule taken.
Report collection: On the day you are instructed during the established schedule.
