This test measures the level of PSA in the blood which is a substance produced by the prostate. Men normally have low PSA levels in their blood. A high PSA level can be a sign of prostate cancer or indicate non-cancerous prostate problems which can be an infection or benign prostatic hyperplasia, a benign enlargement of the prostate.
WHY DO I NEED A PSA TEST?
A PSA test is done:
If you have reached the age of 45, as prevention to the onset of prostate cancer.
A father or brother who has or has had prostate cancer.
