Control your blood pressure and protect your health
Arterial hypertension (AHT) is one of the most common diseases of modern times, affecting 1 in 4 adults in Greece. After the age of 65, the risk increases significantly, while in children it is rare. Although hypertension is usually asymptomatic, it can lead to serious complications such as stroke, myocardial infarction and heart failure.
What are the causes of hypertension?
The most common form of hypertension is “idiopathic” or primary hypertension, which is associated with hereditary and environmental factors, such as:
Obesity
Increased salt intake
Obesity, salt intake, salt intake, salt intolerance, salt intolerance, salt intolerance, salt intolerance
Lack of physical activity
High alcohol consumption
For those who have parents with hypertension, the risk of developing hypertension increases significantly. At the same time, in a small percentage (5%), hypertension may be due to underlying diseases (secondary hypertension).
Why is it essential to control blood pressure?
Hypertension has no obvious symptoms, which is why it is called the “silent killer”. However, for every 20 mmHg increase in systolic pressure or 10 mmHg increase in diastolic pressure, the risk of death from cardiovascular disease doubles.
How to measure blood pressure correctly
Regular blood pressure measurement is the key to early diagnosis and proper regulation. For accurate results
Use an upper arm blood pressure monitor
Stay calm and avoid drinking coffee or smoking 30 minutes before measurement.
Sit with your back straight and relax your arm at heart level.
Take two consecutive measurements 1-2 minutes apart and average them.
When should you be concerned?
A person is considered hypertensive when the systolic pressure remains consistently above 140 mmHg and/or the diastolic pressure above 90 mmHg after repeated measurements.
The importance of proper management
Lifestyle changes, a low-salt diet, regular exercise and appropriate medication can help control blood pressure and reduce the risk of complications. If you are already on treatment, do not arbitrarily modify it based on individual measurements.
