Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: What is it and how can we help you manage it?

29/06/2025

Over time, many men begin to notice certain changes in their urination: increased frequency, weaker stream, increased urgency, or feeling of not completely emptying the bladder. These symptoms, which can appear even at relatively young ages, are very often related to a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

What is Benign Prpstatic Hyperplasia?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland. Although it is not a malignant disease, it can significantly affect quality of life. As it enlarges, the prostate compresses the urethra (the tube through which urine passes), causing difficulty in urinating.

What symptoms can it cause?

  • Frequent need to urinate, even at night (nocturia).

  • Difficulty starting urination.

  • Weak or interrupted urine stream.

  • Feeling of incomplete emptying.

  • Dribbling at the end.

  • In advanced cases, urinary incontinence and even inability to urinate (urinary retention).

How is it diagnosed?

At our Affidea Tecma center, we perform a comprehensive evaluation that includes:

  • Prostate ultrasound, which allows us to measure the size of the prostate, evaluate the bladder, and rule out other disorders.

  • Flowmetry, a simple and painless test that measures the strength and speed of urine flow, helping us to assess the degree of obstruction.

  • PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) analysis. Although BPH is not a cancerous growth, PSA helps us to rule out malignancy in necessary cases. In addition, elevated levels may be an indicator of increased risk of symptom progression and future prostate enlargement.

Is there a treatment?

Yes. Treatment is tailored to each patient's symptoms and includes:

  • Recommendations on lifestyle habits.

  • Drug treatment.

  • Urological procedures such as surgery, if necessary.

The important thing is not to ignore the symptoms or resign yourself to living with discomfort.

When to consult a doctor?

If you have noticed persistent changes in your urination, even if they are mild, it is advisable to consult a urologist. Early diagnosis allows for more effective management and prevents long-term complications.

At the Affidea Tecma clinic, we have the technology and experience to offer you comprehensive and personalized urological care. Request your appointment and take the first step towards a better quality of life. Because health comes first.
