The importance of hydration

09/04/2025

The human body is made up of approximately 60% water, and the percentage of water varies according to age and gender. Without a doubt, maintaining good hydration is essential to take care of our health and well-being on a daily basis.

Some of the functions of water in our body are:

  • Regulating our temperature: It helps to keep the body cool through sweating.

  • Eliminate toxic substances: It facilitates the work of the kidneys by expelling toxins.

  • Preserve skin elasticity: Hydrates the skin, keeping it soft and supple.

  • Prevent constipation: Promotes intestinal transit and regular bowel movements.

  • Reduce the risk of urolithiasis (kidney stones): Prevents the concentration of minerals that form stones in the kidneys.

Brain functions and energy levels are closely related to our level of hydration. In turn, physical performance depends to a large extent on being well hydrated, so water plays a fundamental role during exercise.

It is important to keep in mind that dehydration can also cause headaches, weakness and fatigue, or lack of appetite on many occasions. In addition, the human body loses fluids through perspiration, urine, feces and breathing.

Water is present in several foods, however, it is not enough, and we need to ingest water directly, which can be through tea or infusions, as long as no sugar or alcohol is added.

Specialists recommend that a healthy adult ingest between 1.5 and 3 liters of water a day to stay well hydrated. For all these reasons, drinking water is not only a necessity, but a daily act of care for our health and well-being.
